Intelligent, gifted in Mathematics, strong in languages & with a mental ability to memorise chunks of information, Laura was once destined for a career in the financial world. Having grown up in the tiny island of Singapore, she was taught since young that financial stability & academic results mattered the most.
However, Laura couldn’t keep her creative self from breaking through. After being inspired by a stand-up comedy (“Broadway Beng”), she changed tack & put her memorising skills to good use as a Stage, Film & Television actress – her knack for memorising chunks of dialogue often bewilders cast & crew alike. In addition, she was once described by a director, as having “the rare ability to act while under extreme physical exertion – such as a fight sequence.” Whether an action-filled scene, or an emotionally-driven scene, Laura has the capability to put her heart & soul into her acting.
Once known as “that girl who resembles Karen Mok”, Laura has come into her own after a short time in the entertainment industry. After studying Theatre Arts in Lasalle College, she went on to work as an actress in TV dramas, Corporate Videos, Short Films, Feature Films, TVCs & Stage Shows. Laura has also worked as a Voiceover Artist, Model & Host.
As a newbie, she was cast as the Lead (‘Alex Fu’) in the 32-minute film “Cubik”, Official Selection at five International Film Festivals in the USA & Singapore. It also picked up a Grand Remi Award – Best of Fest (Short Film) at the Houston Worldfest 2010. Her dearest memories of filming “Cubik” involve a wrestling session in the mud, the opportunity to use her Judo reflexes while performing her own stunts, sitting in a Lamborghini & learning how to successfully solve a 5-by-5 Rubik’s Cube!
Laura’s skills don’t stop there. Like most Singaporeans, she is effectively bilingual in English & Mandarin. 日本語が少し話せる — “She speaks a fair amount of Japanese.” She cycles, swims, and plays volleyball. Musically inclined, she plays both the piano & the guitar, and also sings, having been vocally trained at Hark Music. Constantly inquisitive & wanting to learn, her next goal is to learn to teleport – if only she could find a good teacher.
Laura is now setting her sights beyond Singapore, towards Asia (Taiwan, Hong Kong & China) & Hollywood. Not one to rest on her laurels, her foray into the HK industry in Dec 2009 saw her landing an Intel Product Launch Video within 2 weeks of arriving there. Always ready to test the boundaries & find new ground, she recently moved into producing work. Having recently co-produced a Music Video for local band Monochrome, she went on to set up Word Films – dedicated to producing films & other projects. Laura believes in creating her own opportunities.
Paraphrasing Jackie Chan, who was once compared to the legendary Bruce Lee, she says: “I don’t want to be the next ‘Karen Mok’, I want to be the first ‘Laura Kee’”. And she sticks strongly to her unique persona – a mix of unpredictability, emotional strength & femininity – all rolled into one ‘Laura Kee’.
